The MotoGP Series starts with the tradition first race in Qatar, this one called the CommmercialBank Grand Prix of Qatar Losail, and it will happen on March 20th at the Losail Circuit. There is lots more excitement coming from the MotoGP Circuit including stops in Spain, Japan and Portugal right after the Qatar round of the series.
The Qatar Grand Prix, the season’s only night race, presents unique and unusual challenges for Bridgestone’s tyres. Night-time temperatures are relatively cool at below 25 degrees Celsius, meaning that softer tyre compounds are required to generate good grip and feeling for the riders. However tyre wear is relatively high because of the nature of the tarmac. Being located in the desert outside Qatar’s capital Doha, sand blown onto the circuit makes for a very abrasive surface, demanding harder tyre compounds in order to provide sufficient durability.
This year, in the tests Casey Stoner intimidated other riders in the series by setting the fastest time on Monday for the Qatar Test, which is the last pre-season event. His time was 1:55.681 which put him ahead of Dani Pedrosa, who is Stoner's Teammate. Pedrosa was the only rider during the test to come in under the 1:56 mark during that session.
