Dakar has always been a pretty unrealistic dream for most riders due to the fact that the logistics are very daunting. International shipment of a bike to a far away place, time away from work, no "support" network, language difficulties, vast distances in areas with no infrastucture, the difficulties of border crossings etc. Visa's, Carnet's and more - plus Africa while "adventurous" has many detracting qualities.
The Dakar Rally has more "mystique" surrounding it than any other motorsports event in the world today. Forged in the deserts of the Sahara and forced by political intrique to move to the Atacama desert of Chile; Dakar remains the pinnacle event in the world of motorsports. Those of you who ride "Adventure bikes" today are reaping the benefits of what manufacturer's like BMW and KTM have learned over the years at Dakar.
